Though he's barely the size of a kumquat — a little over an inch or so long, crown to bottom — and weighs less than a quarter of an ounce, your baby has now completed the most critical portion of his development. This is the beginning of the so-called fetal period, a time when the tissues and organs in his body rapidly grow and mature.
He's swallowing fluid and kicking up a storm. Vital organs — including his kidneys, intestines, brain, and liver (now making red blood cells in place of the disappearing yolk sac) — are in place and starting to function, though they'll continue to develop throughout your pregnancy.
If you could take a peek inside your womb, you'd spot minute details, like tiny nails forming on fingers and toes (no more webbing) and peach-fuzz hair beginning to grow on tender skin.
In other developments: Your baby's limbs can bend now. His hands are flexed at the wrist and meet over his heart, and his feet may be long enough to meet in front of his body. The outline of his spine is clearly visible through translucent skin, and spinal nerves are beginning to stretch out from his spinal cord. Your baby's forehead temporarily bulges with his developing brain and sits very high on his head, which measures half the length of his body. From crown to rump, he's about 1 1/4 inches long. In the coming weeks, your baby will again double in size — to nearly 3 inches.
I had a appointment yesterday with Edna. Everything went well and she was able to find the heartbeat on the doppler. She told me not to be concerned if she was unable to find the heartbeat because it was still "early" for the doppler. I am so happy she found it because it would have made me nervous. I gained three pounds since last week. I can thank or vacation to the White Mountains for that! The doctor said that was fine.
These pictures were taken at 8pm. My belly is flatter in the morning and grows as I eat. We still haven't told many family members or friends. I don;t know how much longer we will be able to keep our little secret. I am having a problem telling people. I still feel like I don;t want to talk about it. It's hard to explain how I feel. I am excited and I want to share our news but I am still very cautious. Edna told me yesterday that medically everything is great. She told me she could schedule me for an ultrasound if that would ease my nerves. I declined because I don't want to be the "crazy pregnant lady". I know I just need to relax but that is so much easier said than done.
Non pregnant news:
Savannah had her Pre-School concert tonight. I brought the video camera and of course it wasn't working. I have no clue what is wrong with it. We just used it over the weekend while on vacation. I did have the regular camera but we were so far from the stage I didn't get any good pictures.
Savannah is in the bottom row to the left of the boy in the blue stripped shirt.
My niece, Sage. Bottom row, the middle girl with the pink belt on her dress.
The kids were so cute! Savannah did such a wonderful job singing all of their little songs. A HUGE improvement from the Memorial Day Celebration. She actually participated! I am such a sap I got teary when I read her name in the program!
I will try and do a post about our vacation as soon as I can. I have been super busy unpacking and doing laundry. We had an AMAZING time despite cold, rainy weather and our hose having critters (yuck!!!).
